Barrie Colts Alumni on NHL Opening Night! #OHL #NHL

Last night was the opening night  for the 2017-18 NHL’s regular season! There were 4 games on the schedule which included the back to back, defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins vs the St. Louis Blues; the Toronto Maple Leafs vs the Winnipeg Jets; The San Jose Sharks vs the Philadelphia Flyers and the Edmonton Oilers vs the Calgary Flames.

There was a lot of Barrie Colts alumni representing NHL teams on opening night and here is a quick look at how some of the players did.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Winnipeg Jets.

Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little both had decent nights if you overlook the fact that the Jets were rolled over by the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 7-2 loss.

Mark Scheifele was able to score in a long night for Winnipeg. Despite having some great looks on the power play and generating 4 shots on goal, he couldn’t stop the Leafs offence.

Barrie Colts all-time points leader Bryan Little earned an assist in the loss while getting 3 shots on goal. Offencively, the team seems like they have the right pieces to be decent but defencively, and in goal, the team needs to improve. You also must credit the Toronto Maple Leafs for being a much faster and deeper team.

Philadelphia Flyers vs San Jose Sharks.

The San Jose Sharks hosted the Philadelphia Flyers but were not able to beat the 1975 Stanley Cup Champions. The Sharks had a good night even though they lost, but no Shark was better than former Colts forward, Kevin Labanc.

Kevin Labanc scored 2 goals in the teams 5-3 loss. Both goals came in the span of about two minutes. His 1st of the night was a beautiful back-hand with the puck about waist high in the air. Shortly after, he would score his second of the night. He would finish the night with 2 goals, 5 shots on goal, 6 penalty minutes and 50% in the face-off circle. Pretty good start for the teams rookie of the year last season.

St. Louis Blues vs Pittsburgh Penguins.

Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins raised the banner to the rafters of PPG Paints arena for their 2017 Stanley Cup. Though the team started the night off on a high note, the team would ultimately lose in OT to the Blues. 

Alex Pietrangelo scored a goal late in the 2nd period and would go on to score the game winner in OT. The Blues captain generated 8 shots on goal, blocked 4 shots and finished the night with 25:43 minutes. 

Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers.

Not all the former Colts had a good night. T.J Brodie and the Calgary Flames lost 3-0 to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. Brodie was on the ice for all 3 goals against and played 23:49 minutes, while blocking 3 shots.
