Game Recap: The Barrie Colts 'attack' Owen Sound with a 2-1 win. #OHL

Last night the Barrie Colts defeated the Owen Sound Attack to end their 2 game losing streak. With the win the little horses remain at the top of the not overly threatening Central Division with 8 points. So be happy! It could be worse this season.

North Bay, who has a game in hand can tie them at the top of the division with a win in their next game. The Battalion are currently riding a 3 game winning streak.

Anyways, here is a look at last nights game.

First period: Not a strong first period for the Colts. Though they had a couple chances on the power play they were only able to get 8 shots total on goaltender Michael McNiven.

16:20 into the period Owen Sound would get on the board. Liam Dunda would find a rebound after a shot from the point and put it behind Mackenzie Blackwood from a tight angle to give the Attack a 1-0 lead late in the frame.

Shortly after, Owen sound took a penalty but the Colts could not capitalize. The period would end with Owen Sound with a 1-0 lead. Mackenzie Blackwood made 9 saves in the period.

Second period: Barrie had a much stronger second period. Lemieux came out really hard in the first 5 minutes with his line and they generated several opportunities but were either unable to squeeze it in or just missed the net. Lemieux also took a couple penalties so it is safe to say that Lemieux is starting to look like Lemieux.

It would be Cordell James who would tie the game for the Colts at the 14:29 mark of the period. This was a goal that was possible because of hard work in front of the net. Both Radke and Webster were pressing and James was able to put the rebound in to score his 3rd goal of the season.

The Colts kept pressing and got many solid chances but were only able to get the one goal. Barrie HEAVILY out shot Owen Sound 25-10 in the period. McNiven was incredible.

Third period: Early in the period Barrie would go up 2-1 with some beautiful work between Justin Scott and Julius Nattinen. Andersson got the puck up the boards to Scott who carried it into the offensive zone. A nice drop pass to Nattinen who got the puck back to Scott in front of the net who was able to do a nice little move and score. Nattinen and Andersson both got assists.

Not a very strong end to the game from that point on for either team. There was some controversy though with a slew footing major called on James when Barrie believed that it was actually Adrian Carbonara who did it. We can assume the league will take a look since there is an automatic 2 game suspension minimum for slew footing in the OHL.
Owen Sound would out shoot them 10-7 but they were able to hold on to the 2-1 lead for the win. The win would improve the Colts record to 4-3-0-0.

Notes:

  • Colts went 0 for 6 on the power play and killed off all 3 penalties.
  • Colts total 19 goals this season. 4th least in the league.
  • Colts 17 goals allowed on the season is tied for fewest in the league.
  • McNiven made 38 saves.
3 Stars:
  • 1. Barrie - 17 Justin Scott (GWG, 4 shots)
  • 2. Barrie- 21 Brendan Lemieux ( 4 shots)
  • 3. Owen Sound - 40 Michael McNiven (38 saves)
Colts next game is here in Barrie on Saturday when they host the Kitchener Rangers at the Barrie Molson Centre. Pick drop is scheduled for 7:30.
